The partial government shutdown has left many wondering if it will affect their SNAP benefits. With 95% of the division on furlough, it seems many are facing not having food on the table; however, a plan laid out by the USDA has stated, “Eligible households will still receive monthly Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits for January.” The plan goes on to state school food programs, like breakfasts and lunches, will go into February. “Meal providers are paid on a reimbursement basis 30 days after the end of the service month.” Commodity Supplemental Food Program, WIC, as well as the Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations will operate through January, although no additional Federal funds will be provided during the lapse period. Any commodities already purchased will be delivered.
It is clear that, if the shutdown continues, future allotments will be in danger.
