Pound Tumbles as UK Plays Brexit Hardball
Monday saw the drop of the Sterling to a 28-month low. The slide is given credit to Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s statement of the Brexit divorce being dead and his warning of the UK’s leaving on October 31 without a deal, if the EU does not renegotiate. The PM is betting the no-deal threat will make Germany and France -the EU’s largest powers- to push for a revision of the Withdrawal Agreement. The fear of a break from the EU with no deal is the tipping of the country into a recession, making financial markets reel. This would also, theoretically, weaken London’s position as a financial center. The main contention of May’s deal is the backstop, prevention of the return of an Ireland/United Kingdom hard border. The backstop, as well as May’s submitted deal, is not up for further negotiation, according to the remaining 27 countries.
